ENERGY students wanted… at MCC’s SGA meeting!

The major source of funding to support activities for Club ENERGY is Mitchell’s Student Government Association (SGA). We can ensure that we get as much funding support as possible by having students attend SGA meetings – be sure that you sign in as a Club ENERGY member, and our Club will earn credits for every SGA meeting attended by students on our behalf. Plus, attending SGA meetings is an excellent way to keep up with what’s happening all around the MCC campus!

The next SGA Meeting is scheduled for: Tuesday, October 30th at 12:20 pm in room 211 of the Vocational Building

Please let Mrs. Williams know if you are planning to attend this meeting, and if you have questions. Many thanks.

Views on Blue

Check out this interesting article about the color blue!

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/23/science/with-new-findings-scientists-are-captivated-by-the-color-blue.html?_r=0

The write-up by Natalie Angier features perspectives like:
“Fungi, crabs and beetles may do cerulean, said the Yale ornithologist Richard O. Prum, “but for some reason, vertebrate physiology never evolved the ability to make or use blue pigments.” In place of blue pigment, vertebrates and others turn to figment. As Dr. Prum and others have determined lately, many of nature’s most spectacular blues — the plumage of a blue jay or indigo bunting, the teal of a skink lizard’s tail, and now the lesula monkey’s blue scrotum and Pollia’s shimmering blue fruit — are structural in nature. They arise from the specific shape and arrangement of their underlying components.”

Carolina Thread Trail

Some of you are likely familiar with the Carolina Thread Trail already.  This exciting project aims to create a regional trail network that will ultimately reach 15 counties and more than 2.3 million people.  The Carolina Thread Trail focuses on preserving natural corridors and connecting people to nature through a network of connected trails.
The 5th Annual Trail Forum is coming up on Thursday, December 6th.
The Forum will be an information-packed day with sessions providing the latest information and expertise to advance trails in your own community.
Concurrent educational sessions will be led by experts in the areas of trail planning, funding, design, and construction.
The meeting is free, however it is limited to the first 200 people who register online.

Here is some additional background on the Carolina Thread Trail:
“More than a hiking trail, more than a bike path, The Thread preserves our natural areas and is a place for exploration of nature, culture, science and history.” (from their website)

The Carolina Thread Trail arose from a discovery process started in 2005 based on  what local and regional citizens and groups considered the region’s most pressing environmental needs and concerns.  Open space preservation surfaced as a major priority, and that is the need that this Carolina Thread Trail seeks to meet.

Come on out to the forum, or just get out and enjoy our open spaces!
